I used to only listen to podcasts while running each week, but now that I have a longer commute to and from work, podcasts have replaced radio time. Serial was the first podcast I truly got into, for which I waited for each new season like a television show. Then, I found podcasts to be the perfect entertainment for long runs.
Now that I am in the car for at least a few hours every day, I have explored many new podcasts and renewed my love for a few favorites. I have a regular rotation of podcasts on my phone, but every week I listen to five in particular. True crime is where my love for podcasts began, and so this list must begin with this season of Monster DC Sniper.
I tune in every Thursday for a new episode. As with most of the true-crime podcasts, events are unfolding in real-time, so the season has been lengthened to create new content. Since I began listening, I have also run through Atlanta Monster and Monster: The Zodiac Killer. This series is most enjoyable because of the style of investigative journalism paired with a grassroots type of storytelling. Encouraging people to reveal details they would never tell police or reporters.
Speaking of storytelling, an oldie but a goodie is definitely The Moth. Every Tuesday I tune in for another Moth story slam focused on the topic of the week. You never know what the topic will be, but people from all over the world hit the stage to tell a story from a time in their life. The curators of the podcast ensure that each storyteller keeps their story short and focused. One day I hope to see a live taping of a Moth story slam.
Another oldie, but definitely goodie is The Read, also released on Tuesdays, but I usually save new episodes of The Read for Wednesday. Kid Fury and Crissle are comedic geniuses. They talk about pop culture with a comedic spin and end by reading someone or a situation for filth. The episodes are long, so but entertaining.
The comedic relief is necessary, but I still need a daily dose of traditional news. I read most of my news, but I also listen to The Daily for a deeper dive into some of the day’s stories. I enjoy investigative journalism, so this podcast by the New York Times is right up my alley. In the Daily, we get to hear more backstory from reporters/journalists on the news of the day or original stories that give more information about a preassing topic.
Lastly, Read or Dead, a twice a month podcast for mystery/thriller book lovers. Years ago, I fell in love with the mystery/thriller genre through the works of Agatha Christie. Though I read many types of books, I often turn back to the mystery/thriller scene between other works. I especially enjoy Read or Dead because they do not solely explore new books, but they also talk about older works from a variety of peoples.
I could go on and on about podcasts, so I will definitely do more posts on the subject. The podcast genre is booming, and I am a fan. In between podcasts, I listen to audiobooks, so that list is coming soon. If you care to share, please comment below with your favorite podcasts. I’d really like to know!
